Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Solves Wi-Fi Issues by Switching to an 802.11n Solution from Aruba Networks
Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARUN), a global leader in 802.11n wireless
LANs and secure mobility solutions, today announced that the Shanghai
University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) has upgraded the Wi-Fi
networks at its four campuses with Aruba 802.11n wireless LANs and the
AirWave Wireless Management Suite (AWMS). Founded in 1917, SUFE is
China’s oldest financial university and a world-renowned research
institution. The university's legacy network of autonomous wireless
access points did not interoperate well with Apple Macintosh computers,
provided limited wireless coverage, and was very difficult to centrally
manage. Aruba was selected to supply replacement networks at all four
campuses after demonstrating that its 802.11n solution addressed the
university’s coverage and connectivity issues - working equally well
with both Windows and Apple computers - and that AWMS managed both old
and new networks from a single console.
“Wi-Fi usage has been rising steadily over the past few years, and it
simply outgrew the capacity and capabilities of our Fat AP network,”
said Liu Hong, director of the Education Technology Center at SUFE. “Our
new Aruba system addresses all of these issues. It is designed to scale
to support thousands of access points, all centrally managed, and it
provides both state-of-the-art security and self-optimizing wireless
that is tailor made for our multi-media electronic learning initiatives.
We have laid the foundation for a network that can keep pace with the
fast growth and dynamic learning environment of our four campuses for
many years to come.”
The SUFE deployment includes dual 6000 Mobility Controllers and hundreds
of AP-105 and AP-125 802.11n Access Points mounted both indoors and
outdoors. The 6000 Mobility Controllers feature industry-leading 80Gbps
throughput, a field-upgradable design, integrated wired and wireless
security, and guest access features. The centralized architecture
simplifies system deployment and maintenance by allowing access points
to be updated over the network without physically accessing or
disassembling the units. To enhance security, an integrated
policy-enforcement firewall manages security on a per-user basis,
allowing network access to be precisely tailored to meet the
requirements of each campus.
Network management services are handled by AWMS. AWMS incorporates key
features that are considered essential to every wireless network yet are
generally lacking in proprietary management solutions:
Support for multiple generations of technology, wireless standards,
and vendors through a single console interface;
Comprehensive diagnostics, advanced troubleshooting, and reporting;
Extensive Help Desk features and interfaces to third-party trouble
ticket solutions;
Ability to monitor individual interfaces, including Wi-Fi radios, and
configure the access ports.
“The AirWave solution streamlines the way in which we handle routine
management tasks such as updating controller configurations, software
versions, and problem resolution,” continued Liu. “Our legacy system was
unable to define parameters for different users, and as a consequence
Macintosh users faced recurring log-on issues. The AirWave Suite
provides our IT administrators with visibility into the entire wireless
network. We can remotely check a user’s log-on details and history
trails, and if a problem is found it can be resolved remotely. That
frees our IT staff to work on enhancing the user experience and
supporting exciting new applications.”
